CASE STUDIES: The Best 14 End-of-Year Film Industry Lists of 2014

Among the many traditions that befall us throughout the month of December, the end-of-year-lists can not be avoided. Whether we read them or write them, lists are everywhere. Film magazines and blogs partake in that tradition by putting out their best/worst list of films for the year. I have nothing against them, personally, but I wanted to go deeper and probe the news and trends in the film industry for my own list which would be of strategic use to filmmakers and producers. However, my trip to Cuba for the Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano and the usual holiday fanfare put to sleep all that. Still, my Catholic guilt insists that I share something with you. There are many films that caught people's attention in TIFF this year and became the subjects of top 10 lists  but I decided to focus on an interesting experimental short I read about by way of  Daniel Kasman 's mubi notebook TIFF 2014 entries . It was the avant garde short, brouillard passage #14, directed by Alexandre Larose and the sublime little film caught my eye as well (I only got to see the trailer which I have embedded below).  Kasman: Like many avant-garde films, I don't have any idea how Alexandre Larose made  brouillard passage #14 ,  the film which opened the first program, curated around body and camera performances. I think he filmed multiple times a walk along a foliage-lined pathway until reaching a lake and superimposed those images of the corridor upon themselves—but I'm not sure. The FilmPortal.net announces the list of winners at this year's Cannes : The Jury of this 67 th  Festival de Cannes, presided over by Jane Campion, revealed  this evening the prizes winners during the Awards Ceremony. Lambert Wilson hosted Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino on the stage  of the Grand Théâtre Lumière to award the Palme d’or to  Nuri Bilge CEYLAN   for his film  WINTER SLEEP . UN CERTAIN REGARD 2014 Un Certain Regard 2014 presented in competition 20 films hailing from 23 different countries. Seven of the works were first films. The Opening film was  Party Girl  by Marie Amachoukeli, Claire Burger and Samuel Theis. Under the presidency of Pablo Trapero (director - Argentina), the Jury was comprised of Peter Becker (president of The Criterion Collection - USA), Maria Bonnevie (actress - Norway/Sweden), Géraldine Pailhas (actress - France), Moussa Touré (director - Sénégal).  The Jury was honored and delighted to have been able to view over ten days so many excellent films testifying to the diversity and vitality of filmmaking in the world today. They were also impressed by the vision and originality of the works presented. ABBAS KIAROSTAMI AND THE JURY ANNOUNCED THE WINNERS OF THE 17 th  CINÉFONDATION SELECTION The Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury headed by Abbas Kiarostami and including Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Noémie Lvovsky, Daniela Thomas and Joachim Trier, has awarded the 2014 Cinéfondation Prizes during a ceremony held in the Buñuel Theatre, followed by the screening of the winning films. PRODUCTION TIPS: YOUR Calendar for the Top Film Festivals and Markets in 2014

My favorite thing about starting a new year is filling out my planner with all the deadlines and screening dates for all the major contests, grant applications, markets and festivals I want to enter or visit.   Doing this hones whatever filmmaking or networking goals I have set for myself and also allows me to plan out my goals for the year to see in an instant what I can realistically aim for and when.  No matter how successful the filmmaker, he or she is caught up in a cycle of developing, writing, producing and selling projects.  Moreso, the hungry filmmaker climbing up that ladder of success.  For the filmmaker at the bottom, knowing the top script contests, film grants, festivals and markets mark one of the key differences between becoming successful or not.   Knowing the top places to target means you are not wasting time chasing fruitless ventures.  So, if you are reading this, it's because you ARE serious about climbing up that ladder and getting to a poin
